Avoid Naming Mistakes

To help choose a good name that will fit your child and that will also fit into your family traditions, you should avoid the following common mistakes when looking for baby names:

  • Don't pick a name that you are not happy with just to please a friend or family member.
  • Don't choose a first or middle name that creates an acronym or spells out a word (for example, Faith Alice Taylor = FAT). Use our new View Initials program to avoid this mistake.
  • Don't choose a name that does not fit in with your last name. Some general guidelines to find compatible names include not picking a first name with a lot of syllables if your last name also is multisyllabic. Also avoid picking a first name that ends with a vowel if your last name begins with a vowel, don't pick a first name that rhymes with your last name, and don't create puns (Holly Wood or Candy Barr).
  • Don't pick a name that is overly unique or cute or that is hard to pronounce.
  • The biggest mistake you can make and should avoid, is to try and find a name without using our baby name finder.
